Kizhi

This tiny island (2.5 miles long and 600ft wide) has about 90 resident people with about 10 children in the village school. This is one of 1650 islands in the 2nd largest lake in Europe, Onega Lake. There are two churches right next to each other. Officially the large one is the Church of Transfiguration and the smaller one is the Church of Intercession. Our guide called them Summer and Winter churches respectively! This is a beautiful place! It was also a nice walk on a piece of interesting land which provides natural graphite black rocks which can absorb radiation!

There was a Captain's fishing place on the pier, in which Kai participated. You had to eat what you caught. We also had a control room visit with our the Captain and our Program Director, Asia.

Fish that Mathew caught were twice as big!

After we left the island, we saw a Viking Company boat on the ice, and we ran into quite a bit of ice on the lake as well:

  thick soupy ice!
