Second Part of the Trip

The fact that Athens is a focus of  ancient civilization is rooted in every learned person in the world. It is too bad that, as a country, it is suffering now - especially for their young people. Since we had been here before, we decided just to walk around the port city of Piraeus. It was a nice experience. We enjoyed the flavor of this proud ancient city. On this beautiful cool early Fall Sunday, we enjoyed a nice long walk in the city. We passed some shops, churches, parks, and, of course, some homes along the route.

That night, we enjoyed a nice show of the Princess' performing group with dancing and singing!

As we left the harbor, we saw the local ferry parked near our cruise ship. It reminded us that we took the ferry to the Island of Crete several yeara ago and had a great time there for a whole week!

The pretty fishing village of Katakolon was our next stop. Dating from 1200 BC, the ruins of  Olympia with a stadium and the Temple of Zeus are there. It is definitely an amazing wonder of the world as it is the place where the Olympics began. You just have to imagine a bit to appreciate the magnitude and the significance of this place!

This is Gail, Kai's travel companion. She was definitely having a great time. She took quite a number of pictures and was taking full advantage of the opportunities of this trip!

Corfu is an island with quite a bit to offer, primarily because there were quite a number of wealthy, important European people who owned properties there. For example, the Achilleion Palace, which was built by the Austrian Empress Elizabeth in 1898. It is now a museum. We stopped there while taking a bus tour around the Island. The map shows the route followed by our bus.

         Elizabeth, quite a beauty!

  her castle, old and new!

  this chapel is on top:

     Olive tree trunk and bark!

Let's take a picture together! Castle in the town!

A museum we did not get in!

Yes, this is a very long trip! We have two more places to show you. I hope that you are not too tired to see more! (I am getting pretty tired myself.) Dubrovnik in Croatia is actually a wonderful place. The Old Town is designated as a UNESCO heritage site and it deserves the designation. The only complain I have is that it was too crowded.

Venice,  this is another name that every educated person knows. With the sea level rising gradually, no one can predict how this city may change in the future. That is one reason that it is famous now! I remember that I first encountered the name of this city on the water when I was in grade school. Finally I had the chance to see the real thing this time. This was Janice's second time there. It was again too crowded for my liking, but it is amazing! The first time you see it, when you are on the boat and sailing past the city, the experience will strike you forever and remain deeply imprinted on your mind! How could you imgine a city that is built on water! We arrived on the day when there was a full moon: the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival!

See the full moon on the top left of the picture!

a close shot of the moon!

high tide time, water on the street!

Yes, we had a Gondola ride on the canal

   The Doge's Palace with Jail!

A very crowded city! Notice the masks. Venice claims to be the place where Carnival began!
