The Rhine-part II

The beautiful clouds and the mountain framed our boat while we were docked in Bernkastel. I enjoyed walking in the area - on both sides of the river.  It was a great experience!

One discovery for me was finding a very interesting bird in a park along the Mosel near the bridge. It turned out to be a "greek goose". Notice the pink feet and beak!

There was also a group of people harvesting the grapes on the side of the hill.

We do not know how many times GCT was forced to do what they did on this trip, when they found that the level of the Rhine River was too low for our cruise ship to pass. They decided to transfer us to another boat on the other side of the region which was blocked, namely the Lorely stretch which is centered at mile-marker 554. (Note that the famous rock which lured sailors to their deaths is spelled Lorelei in English texts.)

Despite packing and unpacking, the transfer went very smoothly as we moved by bus from one boat to another. They later arranged for us to take a smaller boat

so that we could see the part of the Rhine which, with its sixteen castles, UNSCO has designated as a Scenic Strech of the Rhine River:

       The top of the Lorely!

Katz Castle at Mile marker 556. You can easily see the rocks in the river:

The next stop for us was the city of Speyer. We had a pretty good day there. After we toured the city in the morning, David and I went to the visit the Transportation Museum in the afternoon. There we saw many exhibits of different forms of transportation, and watched a movie of the moon landing in German.

   Movie poster!

The next day, we took a bus to Ludwigsburg, where they have a Fall Pumpkin Festival. It was a beautiful sunny day and  we certainly enjoyed the entire excursion. The pictures are self explanatory:

The largest pumpkin in the world: more than 1000 pounds

Strasbourg is in France, another country we visited! I was glad that we could use the same money!

Our boat going through some locks!

Basel is in Switzerland, where our boat was docked just across from a chemical company:

The three blades point to the three countries which meet at this one spot!

Even in Switzerland we found a trapeze artist trying to make some money in the park!
