The Extension: Romania

The extension part of our trip took place in Romania, in a region called Transylvania, which is described as the Alps of Romania:

Since we spent very little time in the capital, Bucharest, I have included pictures of what we saw there together with the pictures I took during the trip extension. On the first day, we drove through Bucharest on our way to the town called Sinaia, where we stayed at the Hotel New Montana. Janice had been suffering with an allergy for a few days, and, by the time we arrived at our hotel, she was in pretty bad shape. So, the next morning, she skipped the optional tour to Bran Castle, which is what people call Dracula's Castle. I went on the tour, at her insistence, and she went to the hospital to get help for her allergy problem. You must talk with her to find out more details. It was not an easy trip to the Castle as the stairs were narrow and dark. Since I do not enjoy the historical part, it was not the best for me. However I took some pictures inside and out.

This is the front of Bran Castle. Very few in the group were able to get this picture!

This is the back, everyone got this picture!

This was taken on the walk to the castle:

The following pictures were taken inside and are not in any particular order.

When I got back, Janice was home already. She felt better because the doctor agreed with her about her situation and gave her some medicine so she did not have to worry anymore. The next day we went to Peles Castle. This is a wonderful castle, actually almost a palace - well worth the trip. It is one of the best I have ever seen: wonderful carvings, handsome furniture, etc. They have displayed everything very well. It was built by King Carol I of Romania in an attempt to imitate the style of his former homeland in Bavaria. Some pictures might give you an idea:

We also visited Brasov, which is a very old city and now the largest in Romania:

We stopped at Brasov and had lunch there. I walked up to the Black Tower (see below). This was taken there!

There are three pictures I took during the drive. They represent typical scenes in the countryside which I would like to share with you:

  a very young shepherd

  a very nice garden!

  a smoking young lady!

On our last day we went on a city tour in Bucharest. We saw most of the important places. It is quite a city! Very beautiful!

Built by Ceausescu as his headquarters

This young man was one of the fighters in Revolution Square during the uprising in 1989, despite being only 15 years old at the time. He spoke to us about his experiences as we stood in front of the famous church on  Revolution Square

This church is small as it was built during the Ottoman Period.
